Ayurveda places a great emphasis on the value of caring for the mother prior to,during and following pregnancy. We know that the care given to the pregnant woman is for both the mother and child. But the care given after delivery is a life-long one for the mother. Plus it is intended to lend her the health to raise future generations.
These principles have their roots in an ancient world, where multiple families lived together under one roof, and everything from food and cleaning products to medicines were made from raw ingredients within the household. There were many hands to help during the postpartum period, making it possible for the new mother to rest and recover.
Ayurveda refers to a woman as sutika for 90 days after delivery or until the onset of her next period. The science specifies special diet and care for the sutika to ensure a smooth recovery. Such care will enable the uterus to shrink back to its original state and also help produce sufficient breast milk and prevent infection.
An ayurvedic postpartum program is customized to the individual, based on their health, their dosha, the season, and their resources. It also includes a customized herbal regime that restores the agni or digestive strength, support the breastmilk, the immunity, and bala (strength). Bala refers to the strength of the body and mind – the strength of the physical tissues, immune-system, consistent natural rhythms (sleep, digestion, cycles), mental & emotional stability.
